Jesse Butterfield Venetian Plaster

American clay plaster

Natural clay maintains a very dense molecular structure and shape, which gives it the capacity to produce a self-generated negative charge upon hydration. When water evaporates from the clay, negatively charged particles are created. This means that when your walls breathe, or hydrate and dry out a little with changes in humidity, your room is then being steeped in negative ions.

Negative ions are proven to produce positive biochemical reactions in humans. A negative charge acts on our ability to absorb and utilize oxygen, causing us to feeling revived and refreshed with more energy. Negative ions have been proven to increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin, helping to ease depression, reduce stress, and boost our feelings of relaxation and well being.

Science has proven negative ions to: increase the rate and quality of growth in plants and animals, improve function of the lungs protective cilia, lower body temperature, lower the resting heart rate, decrease the survival of bacteria and viruses in the air, decrease the severity of stomach ulcers, and improve learning in mammals. Air containing more negative ions and fewer positive ions has shown to be beneficial and without side effects.

Creating an environment using unsealed clay plasters, or clay paints, will not only help neutralize the electromagnetic effect created by computers, appliances and synthetic plastics, but also will aid in removing the static charge on your walls. The negative charge causes particulates in the air to stick together and literally fall to the floor where they can be vacuumed up. Clay plaster filters the air of pollen and dander. The ability of clay plaster to "breathe" and release negative ions is exclusive and not found in any other wall covering on the market today. Concrete, Gypsum, Marble, Lime, and decorative acrylic plasters do not release negative ions, resist dust, or breathe with changes in humidity. American Clay is unique in its ability to literally alter a space for the benefit of those inhabiting it!
